Veneers Q & A
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells that cover the surface of your tooth to improve its appearance. When bonded, they match the shape and size of your other teeth for a natural-looking smile. Patients prefer porcelain veneers because they look more natural compared to Lumineers. Dr. Veligdan can help you decide which veneers are the best option based on your needs.
What are Lumineers?
Lumineers are a less invasive alternative to traditional porcelain veneers. They’re removable and mask cracks, chips, and other disparities in your smile. Unlike porcelain veneers, Lumineers require little modification to your teeth for installation.
Lumineers are custom-made to enhance the appearance of your smile. Patients choose them when the imperfections of their teeth aren’t severe enough to warrant more invasive treatments, such as braces or Invisalign®.
Who is a candidate for veneers?
People who are candidates for veneers have teeth that are:
- Discolored
- Worn
- Chipped or broken
- Misaligned
- Have gaps
What is the procedure for installing veneers?
You’ll have up to three visits in Dr. Veligdan’s office. The first may be a consultation to check the health of your teeth. This may include X-rays. During the second visit, he removes a tiny bit of enamel from your teeth receiving the veneers.
That enamel works as a necessary mold to custom-make your veneer. Then he selects the perfect shade to match the rest of your teeth for a natural smile. Once the veneers are ready, you’ll return to the office to have them secured to your tooth.
If necessary, Dr. Veligdan may make adjustments or polish your teeth to complete the look. The total process can take a couple of weeks.
How do I care for my veneers?
Veneers last upwards of 10 years, but they’re still susceptible to damage, such as cracking or chipping. The best way to keep your veneers healthy is by treating them as you do any other tooth. Continue to brush them twice a day and floss at least once a day. Keep your regular appointments with Dr. Veligdan every six months.
